Drug of the Nation?

O.k. So here I am musing over my personal and professional perspectives on this "New World" technology. I think I must have an incling now as to what all those explorers of historical antiquity must have felt...a bit like going over the deep end, sailing off to the great unknown perhaps?

It feels that at times hyperlinked text can be a huge morase that can easily distract, dismay, and deflect your attention from the task at hand ( I am already pressing on one hour....have I used my time wisely? I still have to make lunches for tomorrow!) However, it also strikes me as a tool that in very capable hands can be used to redirect, to complement and corroborate all the great ideas that have already been imparted in the classroom. I often think though, there should be an advisory issued "USE AT OWN RISK, especially under a time constraint!"

From a professional pespective I am reticent, and perhaps a bit of a technophobe when it comes to the true pedagogical benefit (although willing to be convinced otherwise), but from a personal point of view I think there is a unique opportunity to discover the great escape or the great find (perfect for the musing mommy or one just in need of some good musical accompaniment).

My one caveat would be to consider Michael Frante's cautionary tale and wonder if this translates into the technologies of the 21st century?

  1. I encounter the same time lapse situation that you have encountered. I tend to suddenly find that an hour has passed -- or worse -- and that I still have a ton of things to do. But then I remember that that was one hour of enjoyment.
